Mater Metis Original Design, Late 2002

Angel of Death/Suriel is a character I came up with in 1990. I wrote and illustrated a novella with her as the protagonist (unfortunately, the manuscript, typed on a manual typewriter, disappeared in one of my moves, *argh!*), and she's very much an alter ego and a part of my personal pantheon. She is an aspect of the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, a fierce protectress and furious destroyer, depending on mood and circumstance.

This image is a collage/photomanipulation/original pencilwork combination . . . the wings are from stone cemetery angel photographs taken by the talented and beautiful Thren0dy, the legs are a much-adapted sketch of Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus," the hands are mine, and the breasts/torso are from my original Angel of Death tattoo sketch. The head is a cat skull.
