Good morning, Persephone
That first awakening, I truly thought
my lightless realm would finally have
a sun.

I took you in your sleep.
Six rubies stained the sheets.

I could have sworn that that a smile touched
the slack corners of your mouth.

When you woke, you grew pale and thin
as if to join my shades. I tempted you
with everything in my power, but nothing
would pass your lips.

I left, and raged, and finally agreed
to return you to your mother, as the earth died
to mourn your absence.

But as you rose, six tiny magnets
weighed you down, drew you back to me --
six stolen rubies, something of mine
inside you after all.

This gives me hope.
Perhaps love can eventually flourish
in captivity.
